The first of my Beginners Pilates Classes starts on Thursday 10th February... You may have heard of Pilates but are not sure what it’s all about/what if offers you as a form of exercise. Well you’re in the right place to find out more…
Pilates has been around for 75 years and the method was founded by... you guessed it Joseph Pilates (see picture below). It was developed as he noticed weak or misaligned areas in a person’s body and it re-educates the body and corrects this weak or misaligned area. Joseph believed that true well-being can be achieved through physical fitness and positive mental attitude.
Pilates is based on these eight principles: Concentration – block out other thoughts and focus fully on each movement; Breath – this is very important as you are using your abdominals to focus the breathing into the rib area (Lateral Thoracic breathing); Centering – this is concentration towards the core as it is believed in Pilates this is where all movement comes from; Relaxation – focusing your mind on how your body feels and recognising areas of tension and releasing them; Quality – the alignment of movement is crucial in Pilates, the positioning of the body and mastering the technique is the key to quality; Flowing Movement – the aim is to achieve a slow controlled movement; Awareness – you will learn your bodies strengths and weaknesses during Pilates and this will increase your awareness and control of the movement; Stamina – repetition of movement will increase your ability and will strengthen the body
Pilates is very popular for all ages and levels of fitness and is brilliant for people who are just starting out on the road to exercise. The method of exercise has also been popular with dancers, gymnasts and athletes who see the benefits of a program which concentrates on mental and physical conditioning that helps you creates an important link between mind and body.
I have used Pilates in the past to help with back injuries caused by playing rugby. It helped in a few ways: It increased the strength of the core muscles and the flexibility of the spine. (This took time to develop but in the long-run it made a big difference). If you suffer from back pain, many Physios and Osteopaths will recommend pilates to help in the process of getting over injuries and this is one of the reasons I will be teaching it.
This class is for people who haven’t tried Pilates before and want to build up their skill level. Also if you have had a back injury and you are looking to increase the strength in the core as part of rehabilitation. You will start from a level which is good for you and build up. All are welcome, so if you have tried it before and want to get back into it, then come along!
